Subj: [kl] One more reason to practice those long tones....
Date: Fri, 1 Dec 2000 00:53:07 -0500

If there is one thing in this world that I *truly* detest, it 'cold
calls' from telemarketers. Tonight, just as I was beginning my
practice, the phone rang and a lady said "Good evening, Sir, I
represent....."

What the heck, I thought to myself, why not....??

"Good evening," I said, "would you wait just a moment while I
finish this?" And then I put the phone down, picked up up my clarinet,
and started my chromatic scale long tones at low E, whole notes with
1/4-note @-----. I kept going until I pooped out, which for me is
high E right now. Then I picked up the phone. Obviously I expected
the line to be dead, but no, she was still there.
"You're still here?" I said.
"I was wondering how high you would go," she replied. Her voice
was just a little bit embarrassed, I presume because she should've hung
up long ago and moved on to her next call. "That's not a saxophone, is
it?"
"No, it's a clarinet. Just one moment more. I need to do the
descending scale or it doesn't count as a completed exercise."

She was no longer there when I finished -- which was just as well
because truthfully I wouldn't have wanted her to hear my wobbling high E
when I attack it first rather than last.

Cheers,
Bill
