Thanks to Dan Leeson for his remembrance of Mark Lifshey.

When you heard him, it was irrelevant that he played the oboe. You simply
heard a great musician. I heard him play in the Cleveland Orchestra many
times during the early 1960s and was bewitched each time. At a master class
many years later, Robert Marcellus went out of his way to say what a
privilege it was to play with Lifshey. At that level, comparisons really
don't mean much. It's enough to say that the sound of Marcellus and Lifshey
playing together was pure joy.

Does anyone know why he left Cleveland?

I don't think he made any solo recordings, but I have heard that he did
record some Bach cantata arias with oboe obbligato. If anyone has it, I'd
love to get a copy.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw
