Dear Bill,
Does that particular keyboard have a sequencer on board? If so, you
can create some simple sequences without a computer. I have always done
all of my sequencing on board (without an attached computer) because my
ENONIQ SD-1 has such a huge memory. Many of my friends use a computer
and they say that it is much easier. For instance, if you want a 100
piece string section, you can achieve that instantaneously. It took me
so long to figure out the Ensoniq that I have been reluctant to switch
over to the computer. However, when I went back to my 30th class reunion
at Oberlin, I found out that all of the electronic music classes are
being taught with any keyboard hooked up to a computer. Just 2 years
before, they (at Oberlin) were using an ENSONIQ keyboard, much more
primitive than mine, without the computer.
Bill, I would suggest that you go to a music store in your area
that deals with keyboards and ask them what they use to hook up their
computers. I know that there are several software programs that are
great, probably the same ones that they use at Oberlin. Those guys down
at the music stores are electronic wizzards. They would be able to
describe everything perfectly. They even have books in the music store.
I am a wiz on the ENSONIQ but a computer illiterate other than my own
personal keyboard.
I think that all of this electronic stuff is very much related to
clarinet performance, because I feel that "portability" of
accompaniments is going to be a big factor in the future. I am the kind
of clarinetist who likes to play several gigs a week. Many of the places
where I perform don't have a piano or a budget for an accompanist. I
like being able to go and perform anywhere at anytime. I have
transferred all of my sequences onto CD's and even have a new battery
rechargeable self-powered CRATE amplifier and SONY WALKMAN, just in case
they don't have electricity. I would hate to turn down an outdoor
wedding reception or private party just because they had no electricity.
Good luck to you. I'm sure that there is an econimical way to hook your
YAMAHA up to a computer, and you will have a lot of fun creating
arrangements for you daughter. ANNIE
