It's fascinating the bits of history that a person can use (or
play, in this case) unawares! Thank you, Michael and Roger, for the
explanation.
I hope someday to make another trip to the U.K. I haven't been
there for 40 years or so. I can just imagine myself sitting on a
train, and I take out my clarinet while I watch the countryside roll by.
Without thinking, I play exactly the wrong tune for the circumstances at
hand....
It also reminds me of a year ago when I was sitting in a train car
(here in the U.S.), and I decided to play a bit, and one of my table
mates turned out to be a near-child-prodigy on the violin and her mother
was first clarinet in an orchestra somewhere. Music bridges many
boundaries, does it not?
