Re. my recent objection to blue language on the list, Tony Pay wrote,

Thank you for the gracious answer.

That was his entire answer, by the way -- straightforward and unambiguous,
IMHO. It's impossible for me to read anything arrogant or otherwise
objectionable into it.

Let's see if I can keep the Tonys straight here.... I hope Tony Wakefield
will reconsider the extraordinary anger of his reaction, which went way
beyond questioning the use of a particular word and instead attacked Tony
Pay's character in general. To his all-caps screamer of a harangue
yesterday, Tony Wakefield added, in the same message,

>>I apologise to the list for this outburst

I think that most of us sometimes say things we regret, but it seems to me
that when someone is uneasy enough about a diatribe to accompany it with an
apology *in the same message,* as Tony Wakefield just did, then that's a clue
that it would be better not to hit <send> just yet. Better to "sleep on it"
first, and reconsider the tone, if not the content.

Tony Pay does assert his opinions strongly, but maybe it's worth stepping
back for a minute and considering that he's not *posing* as an expert on the
clarinet. He *is* an expert. Anyone not aware of his qualifications to give
opinions might go to the GMN Artists site,

http://www.gmn.com/artists/artists.asp?venue=0&aid=1009

look up his biography, then go to the AllMusic Guide's classical music
website,

http://allclassical.com/

search under his name and take a look at where he's been working and with
whom. That list of recordings is incomplete, by the way. Respecting an
authority doesn't have to mean agreeing with everything he says. I've
presumed to disagree with him a few times myself, because I'm not much good
at grovelling and besides, I'll pit my arrogance against anybody's--
>;-)
But if we failed to recognize that information from some sources is worth
more than information from some other sources, and if we failed to
acknowledge that Tony Pay is a legitimate source of top-quality,
experience-based information on the clarinet and clarinet playing, then that
would reflect much worse on us than it would on him. I'm glad he's on the
list. Okay, so sometimes he pops off. No big deal. I'd rather remonstrate,
get it over with and forget it. If we kick everybody out who makes an
intemperate remark now and then, we'll have nobody left.

In sum -- I'm not in favor of Mark kicking out *either* of the Tonys.

Lelia
(hedging against the time when I'm sure to say something so awful that people
scream for Mark to toss *me* out...)
