which reminds me of a recent University Orchestra Performance.
The director used the same wild gyrations for the pastoral,
the requiem, and the Sousa. Hair jerking back and forth, and
the baton flying within 1/2 inch of the left eye then over the brow.
Needless to say, intermission was taken up with nearly no discussion
of the performance, except the one at the podium....

: There seem to me to be two separate issues where the motions
: of a performer
: would have an effect on a musical performance. First, in a live
: performance, we cannot completely divorce the visual element
: from the aural
: one. If the motions of a performer seem to have little if
: anything to do
: with the musical effect, that can be very distracting to the
: listeners/observers. Second, excessive movement actually can
: detract from a
: performers ability to play at the highest level of which they
: are capable.
: If the brain is occupied in sending numerous neural signals
: to the muscles
: which are controlling the choreography, that detracts from
: its ability to
: control and send the signals which are necessary for musical
: performance.
