And at one time many years ago there was a move to close the U.S. Patent
Office because "everything had already been invented." I'm sure there were
plenty of people before 1955 who thought the clarinets had been "perfected"
and did not need any improvement. In reality, we all know that clarinets
are still NOT perfect. They suffer from faulty intonation and stuffy
notes, among other things. That's why we continue to see new models from
many manufacturers. Of course, the tradeoffs they make to improve one area
may negatively affect another, so it is nice to have competition so we can
choose for ourselves which compromises work best for us.
