Roger,

I wonder if the mouthpiece was a mistake? We have a few B44s here and they
allow a standard length Vandoren Bass Clarinet reed on them. Are you using
tenor saxophone reeds perhaps? Or, is it possible someone has refaced it
and taken off quite a bit of material - making the lay sit below the lip of
the neck where the mouthpiece attaches. This is a problem with the Selmer
one piece basses and their plastic mouthpieces. Even a slight reface
causes the lay of the mouthpiece to sit below the lip of the neck and you
have to chop off the ends of reeds to get them to sit properly on the
mouthpiece.

What bass clarinet are you using?

Sincerely,
Roger Garrett
