Carmudgeon time again.
Am I the only one on this list who owns copies of Wayne Wilkins' "The Music Register" (Clarinet Index) and Brixel's "Das Klarinet"? C'mon all you so-called serious clarinetists. Do something intelligent and INVEST IN RESEARCH MATERALS!!! Between those two books there are at least 30 works listed.
Here's another hint about where to find repertoire: the AMERICAN MUSIC CENTER in New York. It is a clearinghouse for AMerican composers' works. Members send copies of their works to it and these copies are rented out for perusal, after which time, you can buy the music from the composer.
The Canadian Music Centre is their analogue. Does essentially the same thing.
Now I'll throw in my 2 cents worth of experience with "unpublished-but-worthy pieces" (let it never be said that I only Kvetch and don't contribute):
I've played a cool piece called "the Black Jewel" for clainet, soprano and taped noises (The noises are only used in one small part) by Elaine Erickson, who lives in Urbana, IL. I'm sure she's in the phone book but if you all can't locate her I'll let anyone have her address if he/she contacts me individually.
Another really nice piece, but unbelievably hard (makes Rorem's "ariel" seem like child's play) is "From the Great Land" by Judith Lang Zaimont. It is for clar., sop., pno and "eskimo drums" which are played by those same musicians. There is even a recording of it out with Naomi Drucker playing clarinet. I believe the piece is availble by rental only.
Yet another good piece I performed is a work for Clar. Sop. and Pno. by Victor Fell Yellin who lives in New York.
