Bill Hausmann quite correctly pointed out:

<<<[Selmer] also do[es] not own Yamaha, which is a pretty big chunk of
competition, although they have for several years bought low brass
instruments from Yamaha and distributed them with the Bach name on them!>>>

Doh! (quoting the *other* Homer). Indeed an oversight on my part . . .
which wouldn't be so bad, were there not at least three Yamaha instruments
of one sort or another in my closet.

There's plenty of competition in the band instrument field, at least here in
the U.S., given the ability to import quality instruments from elsewhere.
(Indeed, other than Guy Chadash, there aren't any really fine clarinets made
in the U.S.) I had my brass hat on; my focus the historical anomaly of the
old Conn plant, and the fact that the Bach and Benge trumpets are now
produced by the same company.

. . . I share Bill's opinion of the Artley student clarinet. It is indeed
a dog. Id the Steinway/Selmer people have a conscience, they'll kill it.
