I went to see James Galway give a masterclass at my school (CCM) =
last night and I was blown away. His ideas about musicality were great. =
I tried to apply some of his ideas to my clarinet playing. Mainly that =
he believes totally in thinking out your breathing or having it planned =
out. I also began to realize the importance of doing rapid scales. I =
guess as a clarinetist, I always thought that super rapid scales should =
be left to the flute player because most of their music is that way. I =
went to the practice room that night and actually started to work on =
Baermann Method 3 at a quicker pace and rapid arpeggios and I started to =
feel a difference. Mostly I realized that my scales are uneven at really =
high speeds! I think the biggest thing that I took from the masterclass =
was that your mind has to be engaged in every phrase and every note. =
Galway's theme was Where is the MAGIC? He talked about how he really =
enjoys concerts where the conductor and orchestra really interprets a =
piece not that just play them. He compared it to a reading. Anyone can =
read music but we need to interpret it!
