That would work, perhaps. I tied a piece of thread -- dental floss
works well -- round the top of my woven nylon (actually) cord, and led
the loose ends out through the mouthpiece/barrel socket before inserting
the mouthpiece. That's pretty secure, and doesn't damage anything.

I fixed it at the bottom with a bit of blutak inside the bell, in a
position such that the line of the cord avoided toneholes.

You could probably get the cord to go right down the middle of the
instrument by having the two thread ends exiting diametrically opposite
each other, and using thread at the bottom too, but I didn't find it
necessary to try that.

In passing, my "What more need I say?" was just meant to address
people's seeming unwillingness to find out for themselves how this very
simple modification changes the behaviour of their instrument.

They'd rather ask an 'expert' than spend ten minutes experimenting, it
seems.

It comes down to narrowing the bore, is perhaps a way to think of it.
But the truth is, I don't know really.
