Depending on the music, a nicer solution that occurred to me after
posting is to write all 7 notes beamed together, under three brackets:

|__ 3__ |

... or for the 'Hindemith-style' time signature, instead of .
|
| 6
x
_ 3 _|

That may not come out properly represented if you use 'sophisticated'
software, of course.
