At least 3 effects have been described as 'flutter-tongueing'.
Firstly, interrupting the air stream by rolling an 'r' with the tongue, the
position of the tongue tip is critical with this method, and some people find
it very difficult to do.
Secondly, interrupting the air flow by raising the back of the tongue which
then, in contact with the uvula, interrupts the air stream. Many find this
method quite easy, particularly if you speak German!
Thirdly, vocalising in the throat while playing. This results in a very low
resultant tone in addition to the principal one, but the air stream is not
interrupted. This effect is used a lot by jazz players and can sound like a
flutter tongue.
