Lelia:

I have two theories about this.

Levin's Theory of Boredom: Classical music stations in the U.S. FINALLY
tired of the top 50 "masterpieces" of the orchestra and the piano. First
they tried string ensembles; then flute and oboe; then brass crap; now
they've gotten lucky and stumbled upon G-d's music.

Levin's Theory of Band Boosters: Starts with the same premise as the
foregoing; but assumes that the post-WW II baby boomers (and current
programmers of and contributors to public radio) were raised in high school
bands. We are sick unto death of listening to piano, string, and most
orchestra music. We're too high-brow to listen to Sousa; but Weber,
Stamitz, et. al. are perfect.
