Subj: [kl] Neat Tunes Today
Date: Thu, 9 Nov 2000 22:16:53 -0500

I heard some neat tunes on the radio today while driving to a lunch meeting.
A whole lot of clarinet -- they guys I work with looked at me funny for
shushing them so I could hear.

The first was Cowell's "Persian Set" -- interesting, quite exposed clarinet
part. Anyone ever play it?

The second was a quartet by Gragnani for clarinet, viola and not one but TWO
guitars. It was performed by the "Consortium Classicum," Dieter Klocker's
group. I had not listened much of Mr. Klocker before; very interesting
approach. His tone -- on this recording anyway -- is devoid of any hint of
vibrato, and very little inflection in general; it sounded almost like an
electronic keyboard (with a very nice tone). It sounded like a ball to
play; the hardest part probably finding two guitarists who can count in time
and stand each other.

Driving back from the meeting, we were graced with the Copland concerto,
played by Stanley Drucker and his pals in New York. I didn't get to listen
that closely in the car, but it sounded like Mr. D had more fun with it than
Benny. All in all a very nice way to go back to work. ;-(

It's unusual to get that much clarinet on the radio in one day; I hope it's
not our ration for the year.
