why does it happen (you'd think a clarinet is a clarinet) and how can I
get through it quickly?

All clarinets are not the same! Not even close. As one example
(among many possible examples), the resistance of your 'new' clarinet
may alter your breath enough that you'll need a different mouthpiece
and/or reed. And so forth. The list goes on almost forever.

Cheers,
Bill

(who finally stopped squeaking after he found the proper combination of
mouthpiece and reed for his own situation)
