I never personally had a good way to count them. For 6 subdivisions, I
just used counted 1&2&3& within the beat. For 5, 7, and greater
subdivisions, I just practiced slowly to get them even and work at starting
them on the beat and landing on the next beat on its proper note.

I like some of the suggestions that have been presented and plan to try them
out though.
