The Hungarian composer (1906-62) studied in Budapest and
took a D. Mus (early piano music by Liszt) in Freiburg,
Germany (1933). He wrote a Rhapsody for clarinet and
popular orchestra and the Quartettino (cl vn va vc) in 1952
The Quartettino has four short movements (total dur:10 mins):
Sonatina/Allegretto moderato - Scherzino/Allegro assai
- Canzonetta/Andante Moderato, sempre molto moderato - Presto
and is in a nationalist 'gypsy' style with the clarinet as the soloist
throughout.
Published by Editio Musica Budapest (EMB) and recorded by
Walter Boeykens: Harmonia Mundi HMC 901419.
There is a good companion piece in a similar "Dances of Galanta" style,
full of vigour, rhetoric and rubato, a string trio entitled Serenade
(1932-50)
(16-17 mins). His Violin Concerto (1952-3) is his best known and
most widely acclaimed work.
