Thanks for the reply. I see now that I omitted an important
detail --- which may indicate that my melody has a flaw in it, but I
can't help the fact that I like the way it sounds.... today, at least.
Namely, I don't want a rest after the last 'stand alone'
triple-rhythm note. This is why I used Brahms No. 2 (see my previous
post) as an example. The quintuplet in measure 10 is followed
immediately by a quarter note, not by one or more sixteenth rests in
order to return to the written beat.

(Of course, I'm going to listen to recordings in order to find out
whether I can hear which way other people play it.)
