..... there's no such thing as a stand-alone 'third note', is there?

Brahms Sonata No. 2 has triplets immediately followed by other 'tuples'
such as 4 and 5. So I'm wondering if Brahms found himself in the same
situation and decided, "I need all these notes for their melodic value,
and when we're playing sixteenth notes as tuples, the small difference
between 3 and 4, or between 4 and 5, won't offend" ??
