but besides a pad check/replacement what should I do before bringing it
back into service?

An experienced repair person will automatically check a lot of
details for you -- including air leaks, pads closing all the way or not
opening to the correct height, plugged register tube, spring tensions,
keys that don't move freely because of accumulated 'gum' or worn rods,
keys that have been bent slightly, and so forth.
The important thing is to feel confident that you've chosen a good
technician, not to tell a technician exactly what to do. If he or she
tells you or shows you what was done to the instrument, this will have
educational value for you. Many (most?) technicians don't want the
customer looking over their shoulder while they work, but I'm lucky that
mine allows me to sit and watch, and he explains things about my
instrument as he works that never occurred to me to think about. In
return, I buy him lunch afterwards.

Cheers,
Bill
