Sorry this is so ON-topic, but I had the pleasure of hearing Richard
Stolzman playing the Copland Concerto last night with the Midland (MI)
Symphony Orchestra. I found his vibrato to be no distraction at all (of
course, I tend to use it myself) and it appeared that he was genuinely
enjoying himself on stage. He plays a much freer and "jazzier"
interpretation than Goodman and, according to the talk he gave before the
concert, that is with the composer's personal blessing. He thinks that
Goodman kept it pretty straight in large measure to separate it from his
jazz performances -- keeping his classical credentials clean, so to speak.
I also have no complaints about his tone. The instrument he was playing,
he told us, was a 25 or so year-old Buffet with extensively modified bore
and tone holes, custom-made barrel and mouthpiece, all work done by Kalman
Opperman. When you are a highly successful concert solo artist, you don't
have to buy "off the rack," I guess!

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
