When I am in doubt about a tempo, I like to experiment--faster, slower.
Usually there will be a pulse that :
comes to life,
makes sense,
feels right,
flows.
To help narrow down the choices, I check both the fastest note passages,
and the most common rhythmic unit.
And i sing (or chant the rhythm) to check that i am not allowing
technical difficulties determine the tempo.
There is a balance between respecting the composer's instructions and
becoming too literal and dogmatic.
This is another of the subtleties of music that are far easier to
demonstrate than write about.
