Actually, I do this. Every so often I steal one of my wife's Chemex
filters and cut it into squares. Seems to work fine - very absorbent.

On the advice of this list I sent my wife to KMart today (kicking and
screaming, and with a few parts of hysterical laughter thrown in) to look
for end papers. We must live in a low rent neighborhood - all out of end
papers, and this on a Saturday night.
