I have an old Conn which is a take-off on those hard rubber clarinets.
Since hard rubber clarinets tended to break a little too easily, Conn
came up with the idea of an "armored" clarinet. It is hard rubber
encased in silver. It doesn't sound too bad, but it's unbelievably
heavy! They tried to get the Sousa Band clarinet section to all play
them, and they had an endorsement from Sousa in an ad. This was in the
late 20's.
