I've bought dozens of items off of eBay, including a bass clarinet, and I've never gotten anything that wasn't exactly what I was expecting. I'd say most eBay sellers are not out to get you. However, "buyer beware" is certainly in order. However, I've seen many clarinets up for sale which I would NEVER bid on. Examples (from memory, not quoted):

1. Seller states "clarinet with ..." - if they think the case is what's important, they likely have no clue about the clarinet.

2. Occasionally, I've seen a seller with multiple entries for supposedly different clarinets, with the same photo for each! I'd be very suspicious of what they're really selling.

3. Photos of clarinet have it assemble improperly.

4. Photos have keywork turned away - I always figure they're trying to hide missing/damaged keys.

5. Seller states "I don't know anything about clarinets ..." - while it might be possible to pick up a bargain from someone clueless, IMO more likely you're in for getting a turkey.
