What are "Gymnopedies" as Satie uses the word in the title of his three
piano pieces? [snip] I'd guess the literal translation might be
"barefooted ones" or some such, although I'd still have little idea if
the reference is to humans or imaginary creatures.
Heh, more than bare _footed_ !!
Webster's Unabridged Dictionary says: "A choral dance of
religious origin performed by naked youths at ancient Greek festivals."
New Harvard Dictionary of Music says: "Three piano pieces by Erik
Satie composed in 1888. They take their name from a festival of ancient
Sparta."
