Here is a parallel, but happier, story.
I have been playing the same C clarinet since
1973. It is a Noblet. The Noblet mouthpiece
supplied was not good, so after shortening
the mp tenon joint of my Bb mouthpiece
(a Boosey 926) which I use on the R13s,
it then played flat around the throat area.
I elected to stay with the good mouthpiece.
I took the clarinet to old George Howarth
(then 70-80 years old) in Montpelier Grove,
Kentish Town, London NW5.
I asked if he could tune it by changing the size holes
and undercutting, while I waited. He agreed.
He made four journeys to and from the workshop
before it was right. It was all guesswork,
but I did not know it then. People frequently say to me
"Oh! Is that what a C clarinet should sound like?
'Never heard one that played in tune before!"
