I'm emerging from reverent lurkdom to second Ken's assessment of Steve Allen.
He was definitely one of those people who helped me to survive my unhappy
childhood (I'm having my happy one now!), and those who know him only from the
Goodman movie and his recent preaching truly missed someone worth knowing.

Now that I'm here, let me introduce myself:

I've recently retired from 25 years in corporate information technology and
have begun studying music, which I have wanted to do all my life. In addition
to resuming clarinet study (after a 37-year hiatus), I'm learning to play the
piano and taking a music theory course. In the spring I plan to take some voice
lessons, with the idea of auditioning for the Saint Louis Symphony Chorus. (My
theory professor, an old friend and chorus buddy, who suggested the voice
lessons, kids me that I'll be a triple threat on "Der Hirt auf den Felsen!")

I've been lurking for a month or so and find this forum helpful and a lot of
fun.

Thanks to the Listowner and to all of you who contribute.

Now back to lurking,

Rhea Jacobs
