Hi I have lurking on Klarinet for the past year. You all have really =
brought
me along. I started playing on my Fianc@-----. =
It has a
Wood body, plastic bell, and nice sound. I had it rebuilt, but after =
playing
it for a few minutes in a session it would squeak with the octave key
depressed. I was sure it was me until I read the posting from the =
student
auditioning for music school, whose pad would leek when wet. I might =
have
given up playing had someone not posted the wet leaking pad answer.
Getting that fixed and that encouraged me to take more of your advice, =
so I
bought an old Vandorn 5RV on ebay. That sure did teach me what you all =
were
talking about when you said some mouthpieces are stuffy. That white, =
throat
scratched up, Revere Mouthpiece was the poster child for stuffy. Then =
there
was the discussion about ligatures this past winter, and I knew I was =
not a
good enough player to need anything more then I had. It did really came =
in
handy, though, when I was visiting friends in the mountains. I pulled =
my
instrument out to play and realized I had left my ligature at home. =
Someone
wrote that you could use a string instead of a ligature and I got to =
play
instead of driving all that way to watch everyone else. It sure worked. =
I
still keep it in the case.=20
Last month, I dropped my 5RV and put a small scratch in the tip. I went =
out
and actually ordered a new mouthpiece. I ordered Vandorn 5JB because I
really only play Jazz. When it arrived, I it was too wide to fit in the
barrel of my Revere. Good thing they took it back. My first question is =
are
some of the old barrels narrower then the new ones?=20
Why would that old Vandorn 5RV fit and not the new 5JB? Did the =
standard
change after 1950? Is there some modification I could make to a new
mouthpiece to get it to fit? (Sanding?)

Second question: A few weeks ago a pin broke in my Revere and I had it =
fixed
along with my (c#) mechanism, but will keep falling apart, needing =
repairs,
and use only vintage mouthpieces? Is it just time to start looking for
something better? Any recommendations for a sweet sounding Jazz setup, =
would
be welcome? Primarily something used, I can bid on ebay for. In the =
archives
it said Bennie Goodman used a Buffet R 13, and mentions for the Buffet
Festival and Leblanc Pete Fountain. I am looking for something that =
will
stand up to hour a day practice, and help me play some sweet jazz.=20

Over the years I have read many forums, but the community, content and
intelligence of participants makes the Klarinet one of the best. Thanks
again for letting me listen in for the past year, and thanks Mark for
keeping this going.
