Just got back from a few days' rehearsals near Cologne. The performance
is tomorrow in Loerrach (Lörrach) with the Raschèr Saxophone Orchestra
Lörrach. Sorry it's not the Raschèr Clarinet Orchestra as I would find
it easier to keep up on my "native" instrument.

I also have the problem with lots of saliva. The solutions offered were
all very clever but maybe something could also be done at the source. It
helps to reduce salivating if you brush your teeth before playing. An
occasional sip of non sparkling water also seems to help.

Playing in the cold makes it worse: Once, I was playing the Rossini
variations (in C) with a local pick up orchestra in Loerrach. We were
playing in the old "Stadthalle", a former stables which fortunately has
now been replaced by a modern concert hall. I needed to blow a few tones
on a fresh reed before going on stage but it was not possible with out
disturbing the previous piece in the programme. So I went outside into
the autumnal weather and did my thing for a minute or so. Shortly
afterwords, I believe it was on the very first note, a high D, I had a
lovely gurgle. In the few bars' rest which followed the intro before the
theme I yanked out my swab/pull through and cleaned out the horn. The
conductor nearly had a heart attack but I made it just in time for my
next entry. The cleaning action found its way into the review in the
paper.
