Richard Strauss to Ernst von Schuch
(Austrian1846-1914) conductor of the
first performance of Rosenkavalier
in Dresden in 1911:
"The C clarinets are indispensable,
urge you to get some. Transposition
impossible".

Out of the 100 movements that make up
the 25 wind quintets by Reicha the honours
are as follows: C clarinet 50 movements,
Bb clarinet 25 movements, A clarinet 25
movements - in the first edition!
