Movie aside (yes, it stank), Steve Allen--even though he got a bit puffed
up and stuffy in his old age--was one of the reigning geniuses of my youth,
an hysterically funny man who ranked second only to Ernie Kovacs as an
innovator and creative madman. Kovacs, tragically, died in what I believe
was a drunk driving episode in 1960 or '61: Allen went on being funny for
years, then donned the mantle of Sage, which did not suit him well at
all. But those early years...God, they are his immortality.
