how did that conducting gig go the other night ? Inquiring minds want to
know.>>
Well, it was a very positive experience. I was scared s***less for about 10
minutes. I expected everyone to walk out the door, loudly proclaiming me a
fraud!
As it turned out, we had a very lively and energetic rehearsal. I did lots of
things trying to get people to listen to each other, dovetail entrances and
releases, match tone, intensity, style, length of nots, pitch, etc.
Basically, I worked like a dog, and worked the orchestra hard too. At the end
many people came up and said it was the most enjoyable rehearsal of the
season.
I am not totally naive. I have conducted before, but it's been a long time.
And, I was not conducting Brahms Symphonies either!
I did have to work very hard to get prepared. I spent long hours studying the
score and listening to recordings. I still got messed up a couple of times
with trombone clefs, and E and D horn transpositions.
The final word? I loved it. I was also exhausted after 2 1/2 hours. Would I
do it again?
In a minute!
Humbly.....
WG
