Subj: [kl] Reed vs. second register

I've purchased and read one of the standard books about reed
preparation. I was hoping that it would address the rare (for me)
problem of a brand new reed, fresh out of the box, that wants to vibrate
in the second mode -- for example, sounding D-on-the-staff when I finger
G-below-the-staff.
This has happened to me only twice during the last year. Each time
I convinced myself that my embouchure or breath was not to blame. The
easy solution is to discard the reed, of course; but I am wondering what
sort of shaving or sanding or clipping a person would attempt if he
wanted to salvage the reed (or to understand better what makes a reed
behave this way)?

Thanks,
Bill
