It is your clarinet so I do not understand why you should not go after the
police, who sold it to Jim illegally (and negligently). They are at the source
of your problem. As someone noted earlier, your clarinet is still stolen
property, even if Jim paid for it - he is in posession of stolen property. It
seems to me that both of you could have a legal case against the police.
