On a tangent to this topic, can anyone say whether the type of pads used
will effect whether you experience "gurgling"? I had my c#/g# pad (not sure
of the convention here, but I'm sure you'll work it out) changed to cork
after I had trouble with the pad swelling up with water and coming off (or
rather, floating) in the middle of a pit performance. Since then I haven't
really had so much trouble with gurgling with this key and so I wonder
whether their are certain types of pad (or cork - but I think things would
get a bit noisy if all the pads were cork?) that would actively discourage
"gurgling". I note Gene says something about using oil around the holes to
"deflect the moisture stream". Surely it has something to do with "surface
tension" the way the water gets between the hole and the pad. Maybe (and I
don't have the physics to back me up) some pads (or the presence of oil?)
might breakdown surface tension? Sorry about the rambling nature of this
enquiry, and I apologise in advance if this has previously been a topic of
hot conversation - I only joined the list recently.

Number 2 is the most reliable.

I had a similar problem. One concert i noticed that clarinetists in the
Florida orchestra frequently swab. Realized that i had never heard a
gurgle note.
Applied for myself. Within movements of long works.

Nutcracker Ballet in cold pit is a *real* challenge, every several
measure rest in the book is swab time. Helps if audience will applaud.
