Number 2 is the most reliable.

I had a similar problem. One concert i noticed that clarinetists in the
Florida orchestra frequently swab. Realized that i had never heard a
gurgle note.
Applied for myself. Within movements of long works.

Nutcracker Ballet in cold pit is a *real* challenge, every several
measure rest in the book is swab time. Helps if audience will applaud.
