Subj: [kl] Legal situation re Bass Clarinet
Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000 20:15:03 -0500

I rejoined the list in time to hear about Hat's difficulty with his
stolen bass clarinet. I do hope it gets resolved, for his and
everyone's sake.

Now obviously, a clarification of the legal situation in which he finds
himself would be helpful -- and I know that there are some people here
who have at least a degree of professional legal expertise.

I'd say that one of the qualities of this list is that there are several
music professionals here who very willingly make available their
knowledge and expertise about clarinet playing.

This professional openness by professionals is not so usual
(particularly in the US, I gather, though I may be wrong about that).

I even hear that some famous teachers actually try to *hide*, outside
lessons, the things that they know, figuring that students should have
to *pay* for such knowledge.

But here, Avrahm Galper, to take just one example, recently shared a
brilliant fingering for top Db that I certainly didn't know before;
which fingering I just passed on to a Brazilian clarinettist, enabling
him to play the wonderful slow movement solo without having to worry
about the slur from C to Db over the top 'break'. (This was in a
performance of Beethoven's 4th symphony I was conducting in San Paolo
last week.)

It was almost the best I've ever heard it played.

On the other hand, there is a silence from the lawyers here over Hat's
problem -- though, noticebly, not over other things.

Now, I'm not so naive as not to know some of the reasons why that might
be so. (And perhaps they're all just busy.)

But I still have to laugh.

After all, it *is* fucking funny, isn't it?-)
