Subj: [kl] Water in the tone holes
Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000 20:06:31 -0500

A solution that has worked well for me is to take some thin, black sewing
thread and cut it a little longer then the upper joint. Put a weight on one
end of the thread and drop it down the first joint from the barrel end. Be
sure the thread is on one side or the other of the thumbhole. Put cork grease
on the upper and lower corks, then use your thumb nail to set the thread into
the barrel cork, then put on the barrel on the joint. Pull the thread tight
and imbed the thread into the lower cork and attach the lower joint. If both
joints collect water in unwanted places, you can run a thread thru both the
upper and lower jpoints. I have found that the thread will stay in place for
several days before having to reset the thread in the cork. After a few days,
the water tends to follow the direction of the thread with the thread
removed. Please let me know how it works for you.

When the clarinet is laying across your lap, be sure the finger holes are
straight up. If the holes are on the side, the moisture will gravitate to the
side key Eb's or lower joint forked F#.
