Dee:

There is no chance that Mr. Hattner did not protect his rights in this
case. The absence of this horn has been a matter of discussion since its
theft. Its loss was reported and the police knew or should have known
where to find the owner. The serial number was traceable. (Did it really
pass through a lawful police auction? Two years seems an unconscionably
short time. I once had a client go to jail for selling items unclaimed for
longer periods. Perhaps Jim isn't telling all.)

Several people have contributed mini-treatises on the equities in this
case; but it is inappropriate. Mr. Hattner did everything any ordinary
victim could do to preserve his rights. Even so, he almost lost his
property. He did what he had to do and should be commended for his
perserverence.
