Subj: [kl] Reed Consistency Study, 1960/70 vs 2000 vintage
Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000 07:33:38 -0500

<please do not turn this into another "Vandoren" thread>

I just finished a reed consistency study, using freshly bought
Vandoren Standards, and 20+ year old reeds I got gratis
when I bought my new/old Buffet (Eb key, articulated G#...life
is good). Here are the results. In all cases, I soaked in
filtered water for 2 hours, then used 600 wet/dry sandpaper
to polish the bottom and top. I then did a quick play, longer
on those that "worked easy", quick on the "worked hard."
(I threw away damaged reeds, they are not included in the count,
but there were only 5-7 in the 50+ old reeds, not bad given the
storage.)

Results:
New Vandoren 4 good 6 marginal
Old Vandoren 10 good, 0 marginal
Old Ciccone 16 good, 3 marginal
Old Ricco 12 good, 2 marginal
Old Johnson 15 good, 0 marginal

ok...what is going on here?
Discussion???

note 1: the old reed cases are the "commercial" boxes with the seals still
on them.
Reeds just put in the boxes with paper in between, no fancy reed cases.
Judging by the deep yellow of the papers, i am estimating 1960's or 1970's
note 2: Vandorens came in "lavender" plastic "pill box", does any remember
when they
last saw that case?
