I'm not sure this answer answers the question, <g> but ....

... when I was in undergraduate school, the major was music education, major
instrument was clarinet. We had a requirement to become "teaching
proficient" on the other families of instruments. Of course, we had to play
our major instrument each semester in an appropriate organization (wind
ensb., concert band, symphony orch., or opera orch.) I think I played in
all of them all four years.

Additionally, we had to play whatever "instrument" we were studying in an
ensemble the semester we finished the basic class. So, when I took brass
studies, I had to play a brass instrument in some organization. Since I was
already playing clarinet in everything, I played baritone/euphonium in a
brass octet. I did sing in chorus while we were taking voice lessons.
(When I took the string class, the orchestra conductor preferred I stay on
clarinet. I never decided whether it was because I was too important on
clarinet or so bad on 'cello. <g>)

This was all to say, if there's not room in the large organizations -- or
they're not quite good enough, set up smaller ensembles for the others to
play. There's a lot of good music out there for the smaller ensembles.
