The two Brahms Sonatas, Opus 120 were originally written for clarinet, and
later transposed for viola. The information can be verified is any major
biography about Brahms.

Brahms Opus 120, No. 1 and No. 2:

Does anyone know if these two staple clarinet pieces were originally written
for clarinet or not? I have heard them performed on viola, and seen sheet
music for viola of them also (the last part of No. 1 seems more appropriate
for bowing than tonguing to me).

Thanks,

Jonathan
