As with many of the clarinet masterworks, the composition of the Brahms
sonatas were inspired by a clarinet performer - Muhlfeld. (Can't them
umlaut dots on my keyboard...) Muhlfeld was also a string player, but it
was his clarinet playing that evoked Johannes to start composing anew.
