I would have to agree with this; though anecdotally rather than with any
hard statistics. When I went to Penn State for my year as an engineering
major I (of course) tried out for both the top Wind Ensemble and the
Marching Band. While I can't remember exactly the make-up of the Wind
Ensemble I do remember that two of the top clarinetists were a Chemistry
and an Engineering major. Of the Freshmen admitted most of us were not
music majors and I remember thinking how foolhardy one of them was for
thinking they should major in Music. I was still of the mind that unless
you were simply _the_ most talented person in the state you wouldn't stand
a chance.
