Dear List,

Something kinda neat happened last week, and I'd like to tell you about
it.

Our local symphony is having a fundraiser by "selling" sequential
measures of an
original, donated composition. Patrons can pick the instrument and how
much music they'd like to buy. Strings: $500/measure, $50,000 for the
entire part; principal winds: $200/measure, $20,000 for the entire part;
principal second winds: $100/measure, $10,000 entire part; and the
(lowly) section wind players: $50/measure, $5,000 entire part. People
play as much each time as has been bought of their part. The entire
piccolo part was sold before we even got to the first rehearsal.

Everyone plays the first 11 measures to commemorate the people who've
already donated, and as the (lowly) bass clarinetist, I was resigned to
*maybe* being able to play more at the season's end. Imagine my surprise
upon showing up at the first concert's dress rehearsal and discovering
that I'd been bought *nine* measures! Worst part: 8 of those nine were
rests, but the best part was that the lst measure was the beginning of
the melody, so I had a
one measure, 2 note solo. High, so it really carried!

I asked afterwards, and lots of people bought the measures, not just one
or two. And the person who bought the measure I actually played told the
lady in the office that she just loves to listen to the bass clarinet.
For a community who has rarely heard a bass beyond that kid honking away
in the second row (not to disparage all out there who love
the instrument, too!), I was totally amazed to find this out.

Cynically, I could say it was the cheapest way to donate . . . but it was
a very happy incident, and perhaps the instrument *does* get a little
respect!
