This answer was insteresting to me. You are suggesting a correlation or
agreement on grades between the ensemble and lessons?

Just to redirect to all who are thinking about it and then answering with
ideas (which have been very good by the way), the problem is that, in a
given year, there may be a walk-on saxophonist or flutist - or several -
who grab the available spots in the wind ensemble or symphonic winds. The
choir is available to a student, and there is no promise from the student
that they are assurred a place in a wind ensemble or symphonic winds - just
that they must take the (or "an") appropriate ensemble.

We have considered a minimum audition score for ensemble in the fall or
winter - that is, if a student successfully passes the audition (is
qualified) but is one of too many people vs. a student who has not
progressed in a given semester and is being passed up by others who are
non-majors but who are also taking private lessons and continuing to
flourish musically.

For us it has come down to - will the choir, or an appropriate jazz
ensemble, or a coached chamber ensemble satisfy the ensemble requirement
for a semester?

Thanks to all who have contributed thus far - it is giving me a really good
outline from which to proceed.

Sincerely,
Roger Garrett
