If the University accepted the students money and the Music Department accepted
the student into the department as a music student and places course work
requirements upon that student for any reason (graduation, degrees, advancement
to next level of whatever) then I say "Yes". The music department must provide
the opportunity for that student to fulfill any requirements that are agreed
upon by both parties or provide alternatives that are acceptable educationally,
morally, and personally by all concerned. If the student is denied access to
the very courses or performance groups which he/she is required to take then
there is something wrong with the operations of the department. They aren't
playing fair. If you were in this students shoes (ouch), and assuming the
student is serious about his/her goals and what he/she expects to gain from
attending your school, and you knew up front that this road block would be
placed in front of you, you would probably consider this reason enough to
attend another school. On the other hand if this someone is trying to
'washout' this student, it should be done in a more open and honest manner.

3 cents worth from an educator of 35 years, soon to retire.
